Introduction:

Sadaqa (charity) is highly recommended for shielding oneself from calamities, epidemics, disasters, and losses. Giving charity in the morning protects one from the misfortunes of the day and giving charity in the evening protects one from calamities of the night. Fulfilling requests of others, i.e., giving way on a road, doing favours to others is also considered to be a kind of charity. We have been instructed by the Masomeen^-asws to give away charity prior to being inflicted by a misfortune. Few Verses from the Holy Quran and selected ahadith of Masomeen^-asws are presented related to the topic. All Ahadith are taken from Wasail ul Shia.[1]

The Holy Quran:

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَأْخُذُ الصَّدَقَاتِ وَأَنَّ اللّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Know they not that Allah accept repentance from His servants and receives their gifts of charity, and that Allah is verily He, the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful [9:104]

يَمْحَقُ اللّهُ الْرِّبَا وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَاللّهُ لاَ يُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ أَثِيمٍ

Allah eradicates the usury (Interest) and exceeds the charities and Allah doesn’t love all ungrateful sinners. [2:276]

The Traditions of Masomeen^-asws:

قال الإمام ع أَقِيمُوا الصَّلاةَ بإتمام وضوئها و تكبيراتها و قيامها و قراءتها و ركوعها و سجودها و حدودها. وَ آتُوا الزَّكاةَ مستحقيها، لا تؤتوها كافرا و لا مناصبا. قال رسول الله ص «المتصدق على أعدائنا كالسارق في حرم الله».

Imam Hassan Askari^-asws said: And give Zakat to the deserving but don’t give it the Kufar and Nasabis. Rasool-Allah^-saww said: Giving Sadaqa to Our^–asws enemies is like stealing from house of Allah^-azwj.[2]

كَنْزُ الْكَرَاجُكِيِّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ شَاذَانَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ عَنِ الصَّفَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ مَلْعُونٌ مَلْعُونٌ مَنْ وَهَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَالًا فَلَمْ يَتَصَدَّقْ مِنْهُ بِشَيْ‏ءٍ أَ مَا سَمِعْتَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ص قَالَ صَدَقَةُ دِرْهَمٍ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ صَلَاةِ عَشْرِ لَيَالٍ

It is narrated from a chain of narrators that giving one Dirham in charity is far better than praying for ten nights.[3]

Charity is Recommended Even If One is in Hardship[4].

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن غياث بن إبراهيم ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : إن الصدقة تقضي الدين وتخلف بالبركة

The Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘Giving charity is the means for the repayment of debt and goodness and blessings’.

وعن علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم ، عن أبيه ، عن الحسين بن يزيد النوفلي ، عن السكوني ، عن أبي عبدالله (عليه السلام ) قال : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : الصدقة تدفع ميتة السوء

It is narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that Rasool-Allah^-saww said: ‘Giving charity wards off bad death’.

عن أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) قال: ما أحسن عبد الصدقة في الدنيا إلا أحسن الله الخلافة على ولده من بعده،وقال: حسن الصدقة يقضي الدين ويخلف على البركة.

The Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘The person who gives charity in a good manner then Allah^-azwj protects his children in a good manner after his death. Good charity becomes the means for the repayment of debt and goodness and blessings’.

وعن أحمد بن عبدالله ، عن جده ، عن محمد بن علي ، عن محمد بن الفضيل ، عن عبد الرحمن بن زيد ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) : أرض القيامة نار ما خلا ظل المؤمن فان صدقته تظله

The Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘The Holy Prophet^-saww said that on the Day of Judgment the whole earth will be on fire except for the believer as his charity would shield him’.

عن أحمد ، عن علي بن حسان ، عن موسى بن بكر عن أبي الحسن ( عليه السلام ) قال : استنزلوا الرزق بالصدقة

The Holy Imam Musa Al Kadhim^-asws said: ‘Supplicate for sustenance by way of charity’.

عن سعد ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي نجران ، عن أبي جميلة ، عن جابر ، عن أبي جعفر (عليه السلام ) قال : قال علي بن أبي طالب ( عليه السلام ) : تصدقت يوما بدينار فقال لي رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : أما علمت يا علي ، ان صدقة المؤمن لا تخرج من يده حتى يفك ⁽¹⁾ عنها من ⁽²⁾ لحى سبعين شيطانا كلهم يأمره بأن لا يفعل ، وما تقع في يد السائل حتى تقع في يد الرب جل جلاله ، ثم تلا هذه الاية : ( ألم يعلموا أن الله هو يقبل التوبة عن عباده ويأخذ الصدقات وان الله هو التواب الرحيم )

It is narrated from the Holy Imam Muhammad Al Baqir^-asws that “The Commander of the Faithful^-asws said, ‘One day I gave one Dinar in charity. The Holy Prophet^-saww then said to me: ‘O Ali^-asws! Do you know that charity does not leave the hands of a believer until such time as he does not snatch it away from the jaws of seventy shaytans[5], and each one of those shaytans tells him not to give in charity!” And then this charity does not reach the hands of the receiver until it first reaches Allah^-azwj. Then He^-saww recited the Verse
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَأْخُذُ الصَّدَقَاتِ وَأَنَّ اللّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ (Do they not know that Allah accepts repentance from His servants and takes the alms, and that Allah is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful? – 9:104)

وبالإسناد قال : قال النبي ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : باكروا بالصدقة ، فمن باكر بها لم يتخطاه البلاء

The Holy Prophet^-saww said: “Give charity in the early morning since disasters and difficulties do not find a way to the person who gives charity in the early morning”.

عن جعفر بن محمد ، عن آبائه ، عن علي ( عليهم السلام ) قال : الصدقة جنة .

The Holy Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib^-asws said: “Charity is a shield against the fire of Hell”.

وَ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَّ رَجُلًا شَكَا إِلَيْهِ إِنَّنِي فِي (عَشَرَةِ نَفَرٍ) مِنَ الْعِيَالِ كُلُّهُمْ مَرِيضٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ مُوسَى ع دَاوِهِمْ بِالصَّدَقَةِ فَلَيْسَ شَيْ‏ءٌ أَسْرَعَ إِجَابَةً مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ وَ لَا أَجْدَى مَنْفَعَةً لِلْمَرِيضِ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ

It is narrated that someone complained about sickness in his family of ten children to Imam Musa bin Jafar^-asws, and said: ‘all of them are unwell’, Imam^-asws replied there is nothing more effective than charity for a faster response. It is the best cure for patients.

عن المفضل بن عمر قال : سمعت أبا عبدالله جعفر بن محمد ( عليه السلام ) يقول : لا يكمل إيمان العبد حتى يكون فيه أربع خصال : يحسن خلقه ، وتسخو نفسه ، ويمسك الفضل من قوله ، ويخرج الفضل من ماله .

The Holy Imam Jafar Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘A person’s faith does not become complete until such time as he has four characteristics – Good morals, charitable soul, less speech and spends liberally (but without wasting).

Looking after Fellow Muslims is better than Performing Hajj

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن عدة من أصحابنا ، عن أحمد بن أبي عبدالله ⁽¹⁾ ، عن أبيه ، عن خلف بن حماد ، عن إسماعيل الجوهري ، عن أبي بصير ، عن أبي جعفر ( عليه السلام ) قال : لان أحج حجة أحب إلي من أن اعتق رقبة ورقبة حتى انتهى إلى عشر ومثلها ومثلها حتى انتهى إلى سبعين ، ولإن أعول أهل بيت من المسلمين ، اشبع جوعتهم وأكسو عورتهم ⁽²⁾ ، وأكف وجوههم عن الناس ، أحب إلي من أن أحج حجة وحجة ⁽³⁾ حتى انتهى إلى عشر وعشر ⁽⁴⁾ ومثلها ⁽⁵⁾ حتى انتهى إلى سبعين

The Holy Imam Muhammad Baqir^-asws said: “I prefer to perform one Pilgrimage of the House of Allah^-azwj rather than free a slave, free one more slave, free one more slave (Until this gets repeated seventy times). I prefer to take over the responsibility of one of the households from among the Muslims, feed the hungry from among them, clothe them, and save their honour so that they do not have to beg from others, rather than to perform one Pilgrimage, one more Pilgrimage, one more Pilgrimage’ (Until this gets repeated seventy times).

Charity on Behalf of a patient

عن عبدالله بن سنان ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : سمعته يقول : يستحب للمريض أن يعطي السائل بيده ، ويأمر السائل أن يدعو له

The Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: “It is preferable for a sick person to give charity with his own hands and the recipient should be asked to supplicate for the giver”.

Charity to be given by the Poor as well as the Rich

وعن الحسين بن أحمد ، عن أبيه ، عن محمد بن أحمد ، عن إبراهيم بن هاشم ، عن موسى بن أبي الحسن ، عن أبي الحسن الرضا ( عليه السلام ) قال ⁽¹⁾ : ظهر في بني إسرائيل قحط شديد سنين متواترة ، وكان عند امرأة لقمة من خبز فوضعته في فمها لتأكله ⁽²⁾ فنادى السائل : يا أمةالله ، الجوع ، فقالت المرأة : أتصدق في مثل هذا الزمان ، فأخرجتها من فيها فدفعتها إلى السائل ، وكان لها ولد صغير يحتطب في الصحراء فجاء الذئب فحمله فوقعت الصيحة ، فعدت الام في أثر الذئب فبعث الله تبارك وتعالى جبرئيل ( عليه السلام ) فأخرج الغلام من فم الذئب فدفعه إلى امه ، فقال لها جبرئيل ( عليه السلام ) : يا أمة الله ، أرضيت ؟ لقمة بلقمة

The Holy Imam Ali Al Ridha^-asws said: ‘Once upon a time there came a drought upon the Israelites, which lasted for some years. Among them there was a woman who only had one morsel of food which she decided to eat due to hunger. A beggar came up and said to her, ‘O slave of God, I am starving!’ The woman replied, ‘Is charity to be given even in this situation?’ She then took the morsel of food out of her mouth and gave it to him. She had a young son who had gone into the jungle to fetch some wood. A wild animal attacked the boy and started taking him away. When the mother heard the boy screaming she started running after the wild animal. Allah^-azwj then ordered the angel Jibraeel^–as to descend upon the animal and rescue the young boy. Jibraeel^–as then said to the woman: ‘O slave of God, are you happy with this? A nibble for a nibble!’

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن علي بن إبراهيم ، عن أبيه ، عن ابن أبي عمير ، عن هشام بن سالم ، عن زرارة ، عن سالم بن أبي حفصة ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : إن الله يقول : ما من شيء إلا وقد وكلت به من يقبضه غيري إلا الصدقة ، فإني أتلقفها بيدي تلقفا حتى ان الرجل ليتصدق بالتمرة أو بشق تمرة فاربيها له كما يربي الرجل فلوه وفصيله فيأتي يوم القيامة وهو مثل احد وأعظم من احد .

The Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws narrated that ‘Allah^-azwj Says: ‘I have appointed a creature to look after every affair except for charity which I have kept in My Hands. When a person gives in charity a date of a part of it then I look after him in the same way as you look after your young calves and camels. This charity will be like the mountain of Ohad, or even bigger on the Day of Judgment’.

Give Away Charity Early in the Morning

قال : وقال ـ يعني : الصادق ( عليه السلام ) ـ : باكروا بالصدقة فإن البلايا لا تتخطاها ، ومن تصدق بصدقة أول النهار دفع الله عنه شر ما ينزل من السماء في ذلك اليوم ، فإن تصدق أول الليل دفع الله عنه شر ما ينزل من السماء في تلك الليلة

Sheykh Al Sadouq has narrated that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws has said: ‘Give charity early in the morning as afflictions will not come near you. Whoever gives charity in the early part of the day then Allah^-azwj will keep him safe from every evil that descends from the sky during that day, and if he were to give charity in the early part of the night then Allah^-azwj will protect him from every evil that descends from the sky during the night.

Secure yourself through Charity When Expecting Misfortune

وعن علي بن محمد بن عبدالله ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد ، عن أبيه ، عن فضالة بن أيوب ، عمن ذكره ، عن محمد بن مسلم قال : كنت مع أبي جعفر ( عليه السلام ) في مسجد الرسول ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) فسقطت شرفة من شرف المسجد فوقعت على رجل فلم تضره وأصابت رجله ، فقال أبوجعفر ( عليه السلام ) : سلوه أي شيء عمل اليوم ؟ فسألوه ، فقال : خرجت وفي كمي تمر فمررت بسائل فتصدقت عليه بتمرة ، فقال أبوجعفر ( عليه السلام ) : بها دفع الله عنك .

Muhammad Bin Muslim narrates that he was sitting near the Holy Imam Muhammad Baqir^-asws in the Holy Prophet^-saww’s Mosque when a small pebble fell on a person and struck him on his leg, but did not cause him any damage. The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘Ask this man what he has done today’. He replied: ‘When I left home today I had some dates on me. I passed by a beggar and gave him one date’. The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘This is why Allah^-azwj has kept this affliction away from you’.

Giving Away Charity if Expecting Calamities

محمد بن علي بن الحسين في ( عيون الاخبار ) عن محمد بن القاسم المفسر ، عن أحمد بن الحسن الحسيني ، عن الحسن بن علي العسكري ( عليه السلام ) ، عن آبائه ( عليهم السلام ) ، قال : كان الصادق ( عليه السلام ) في طريق ومعه قوم ومعهم أموال ، وذكر لهم أن بارقة ⁽¹⁾ في الطريق يقطعون على الناس ، فارتعدت فرائصهم ـ إلى أن قال : ـ فقالوا له : كيف نصنع ، دلنا ؟ فقال : اودعوها من يحفظها ويدفع عنها ويربيها ويجعل الواحد منها أعظم من الدنيا بما فيها ، ثم يردها ويوفرها عليكم أحوج ما تكونون إليها ، قالوا : ومن ذلك ؟ قال : ذاك رب العالمين ، قالوا : وكيف نودعه ؟ قال : تتصدقون به على ضعفاء المسلمين ، قالوا : وأنى لنا الضعفاء بحضرتنا هذه ؟ قال : فاعزموا على أن تتصدقوا بثلثها ليدفع الله عن باقيها من تخافون ، قالوا : قد عزمنا ، قال فأنتم في أمان الله فمضوا فظهرت لهم البارقة فخافوا ، ثم ذكر نجاتهم منهم وأنهم مضوا سالمين ، وتصدقوا بالثلث ، وبورك لهم في تجارتهم وربحوا الدرهم عشرة

Sheykh Al Sadouq has narrated from Ahmad Hassan Al Husayni who heard from the Holy Imam Hassan Al Askari^-asws who from his ancestral chain that one day the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws was travelling along with some people who had a lot of wealth on them. When they came to know that there were some highway robbers in the area, they were overcome with trepidation and so they came to the Holy Imam^-asws for advice. The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘Leave this wealth in the protection of One Who will take care of it and protect it from the world and what is in it in such a way that He^-azwj will return it back to you manifold in a time when you are desperately in need of it’. The asked: ‘And who is that?’ He^-asws said: ‘He^-azwj is the Nourisher of the worlds’. They asked: ‘And how do we entrust it to Him^-azwj?’ He^-asws answered: ‘Give charity to the poor and helpless Muslims’. They inquired: ‘And where do we find helpless and poor Muslims over here?’ He^-asws said: ‘Make your intention that were you to come across poor and helpless Muslims you will give away a third of your wealth in charity to them so that Allah^-azwj may protect you from the looting of the highway robbers whom you fear’. They all said: ‘And so we hereby make this intention’. The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘And so you are now in God’s safety!’ Then they continued on their travel until such time that they came across the highway robbers and were overcome with fear. But, due to their following of the advice of the Holy Imam^-asws they all arrived safely to their destination. They then kept their intended actions and gave away a third of their wealth in charity as a result of which they had such good profits from their businesses from its blessing that their money multiplied itself ten times’.

Begin the Day and the Night with Charity

وعن عدة من أصحابنا ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد بن خالد ، عن سعدان بن مسلم ، عن معلى بن خنيس ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ـ في حديث ـ قال : إن صدقة الليل تطفئ غضب الرب ، وتمحو الذنب العظيم ، وتهون الحساب ، وصدقة النهار تثمر المال ، وتزيد في العمر

Ma’la Bin Khanis has narrated that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws commented upon one narration that: ‘The charity of the night douses out the Wrath of Allah^-azwj, eradicates major sins, and makes the accounting of the deeds easier while the charity of the day increases the wealth and prolongs life’.

Giving Charity in Secret is Better

وعن الحسين بن محمد ، عن معلى بن محمد ، عن علي بن مرداس ، عن صفوان بن يحيى وابن محبوب ، عن هشام بن سالم ، عن عمار الساباطي قال : قال لي أبو عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) : يا عمار ، الصدقة والله في السر أفضل من الصدقة في العلانية ، وكذلك والله العبادة في السر أفضل منها في العلانية .

Ammar Sabati has narrated that he heard from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘O Ammar! Giving charity secretly is better than giving it openly just as worshipping in secret is better than worshipping openly’.

Never Turn Down a Cry of Help at Night

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن علي بن إبراهيم ، عن أبيه ، عن النوفلي ، عن السكوني ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ، عن آبائه ( عليهم السلام ) قال : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) : إذا طرقكم سائل ذكر بليل فلا تردوه .

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Sakuni who heard from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws who from his ancestral chain that the Holy Prophet^-saww said: ‘When a beggar comes around to ask during the night do not send him away empty handed’.

Give Charity to a Momin

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن علي بن محمد بن عبدالله ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد بن خالد ، عن عبدالله بن القاسم ، عن عبدالله بن سنان ـ في حديث ـ قال : قال أبو عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) : ليس شيء أثقل على الشيطان من الصدقة على المؤمن ، وهي تقع في يد الرب تبارك وتعالى قبل أن تقع في يد العبد .

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘Nothing is heavier on the shaytan^-la than the giving of charity to a believer because the charity reaches the Hand of God before it reaches the hands of a believer’.

وعن عدة من أصحابنا ، ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد ابن خالد ، عن سعدان بن مسلم ، عن معلى بن خنيس ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ـ في حديث ـ قال : إن الله لم يخلق شيئا إلا وله خازن يخزنه إلا الصدقة ، فإن الرب يليها بنفسه ، وكان أبي إذا تصدق بشيء وضعه في يد السائل ثم ارتده منه فقبله وشمه ثم رده في يد السائل

Ma’la Bin Khanis has narrated that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘There is not anything that Allah^-azwj has created but has appointed a treasurer for it except charity for Allah^-azwj Himself is in charge of it. It was the way of My Father^-asws that whenever He^-asws used to give something in charity He^-asws used to take it back and kiss it and smell it before giving it back to him’.

Charity for Near Ones

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن علي بن إبراهيم ، عن أبيه ، عن النوفلي ، عن السكوني ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : سئل رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : أي الصدقة أفضل ؟ قال : على ذي الرحم الكاشح

Sheykh Kulayni narrates from Sakuni that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said; ‘The Holy Prophet^-saww was asked as to what is the best charity to which He^-saww replied; It is the charity that is given to the adversaries among the relatives’.

أحمد بن علي بن أبي طالب الطبرسي في ( الاحتجاج ) عن محمد بن عبدالله بن جعفر الحميري ، عن صاحب الزمان (عليه السلام ) أنه كتب إليه يسأله عن الرجل ينوي إخراج شيء من ماله وأن يدفعه إلى رجل من إخوانه ثم يجد في أقربائه محتاجا ، أيصرف ذلك عمن نواه له إلى قرابته ؟ فأجاب ( عليه السلام ) : يصرفه إلى أدناهما وأقربهما من مذهبه ، فإن ذهب إلى قول العالم ( عليه السلام ) : لا يقبل الله الصدقة وذو رحم محتاج ، فليقسم بين القرابة وبين الذي نوى حتى يكون قد أخذ بالفضل كله .

Sheykh Tabarsi narrates from Muhammad Bin Abdullah Bin Ja’far Humeyri that he sent a letter to the Holy Imam Mahdi^-asws asking that a person had made the intention to give a portion of his wealth to someone and then found out that one of his relatives is in need. Does this man now change his intention and give it to the relative? The Holy Imam Mahdi^-asws wrote back: ‘Give it to the person who is closest to the religion of truth (Deen E Haq) and if he wants to act upon the A’alam (The Holy Imam^-aswstraditions), then they^-asws say that if a needy relative is present then there is no charity for others. Therefore he should divide the intended wealth between them so that he can gain both the rewards’.

Prefer Giving Charity to Believers

محمد بن الحسن بإسناده عن الصفار ، عن علي بن بلال ( قال : كتبت إليه أسأله هل يجوز أن أدفع زكاة المال والصدقة إلى محتاجغير أصحابي ) ؟ فكتب : لا تعط الصدقة والزكاة إلا أصحابك

Sheykh Toosi has narrated from Ali Ibn Hilal that he wrote a letter to the Holy Imam Ali Naqi^-asws asking whether, from a portion of his wealth he can give it to someone other than his fellow believers in faith. The Holy Imam^-aswsreplied: ‘Do not give it to anyone other than your fellow believers’.

وعنهم ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد بن علي ، عن الحكم بن مسكين ، عن عمرو بن أبي نصر قال : قلت لابي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) : إن أهل البوادي ⁽¹⁾ يقتحمون علينا وفيهم اليهود والنصارى والمجوس فنتصدق عليهم ؟ قال : نعم

Amro Bin Abu Nasr has narrated that one day he asked the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws: ‘Sometimes the villagers come to us and there are Jews, Christians and Magians among them. Can we give to them (in charity)?’ The Holy Imam^-asws replied: ‘Yes you can’. (The writer of this book has commented that this is because there is uncertainty about their religion and so it can be given to them).

Give to Three Beggars in a Day

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى ، عن الحسن بن محبوب ، عن عبدالله بن سنان ، عن الوليد بن صبيح قال : كنت عند أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ⁽¹⁾ فجاءه سائل فأعطاه ، ثم جاءه آخر فأعطاه ، ثم جاءه آخر ( فأعطاه ، ثم جاءه آخر ) ⁽²⁾ فقال : وسع ⁽³⁾ الله عليك ، ثم قال : إن رجلا لو كان له مال يبلغ ثلاثين أو أربعين ألف درهم ثم شاء أن لا يبقى منها إلا وضعها في حق لفعل فيبقى لا مال له ، فيكون من الثلاثة الذين يرد دعاؤهم ، قلت : من هم ؟ قال : أحدهم رجل كان له مال فأنفقه في ( غير ) ⁽⁴⁾ وجهه ثم قال : يارب ارزقني ، فيقال له : ألم أجعل لك سبيلا إلى طلب الرزق .

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Walid Ibn Sabeen who said that: ‘One day I went to the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws and a beggar came by, so the Imam^-aswsgave him something. Then another one came along and He^-asws gave him something as well. After the call for prayer one more beggar came along and He^-asws gave him something too. Then a fourth one came along at which point Imam^-asws said to the beggar: ‘May God give you extensively. If a person has thirty or forty thousand Dirham and wishes to give it, he can do so but the result of that would be that he would have nothing left. He would end up being one of three people whose supplication Allah^-azwj does not accept. I asked the Holy Imam^-asws as to which three people are these. He^-asws replied: ‘One of them is he who gives away all that he has got and after the call to prayer supplicates to God to give him sustenance. He will be told, ‘Did we not open the door of sustenance for you?’

وعنه ، عن أحمد ، عن عثمان بن عيسى ، عن علي بن أبي حمزة قال : سمعت أبا عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) يقول في السؤال : أطعموا ثلاثة ، وإن شيءتم أن تزدادوا فازدادوا والا فقد أديتم حق يومكم .

Ali Bin Abu Hamzah has narrated that he heard the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws say: ‘Feed three people. If you wish to go further then do so otherwise you have already fulfilled the right of that day’.

Charitable Items, if returned, Must be Re-spent in the Way of Allah^-azwj

عبدالله بن جعفر في ( قرب الإسناد ) : عن الحسن بن ظريف ، عن الحسين بن علوان ، عن جعفر ، عن أبيه ، أن عليا ( عليه السلام ) قال كان يقول : من تصدق بصدقة فردت عليه فلا يجوز له أكلها ، ولايجوز له إلا إنفاقها ⁽¹⁾ ، إنما منزلتها بمنزلة العتق لله ، فلو أن رجلا أعتق عبداً لله فرد ذلك العبد لم يرجع في الامر الذي جعله لله ، فكذلك لا يرجع في الصدقة .

Abdullah Ja’far Humeyri has narrated from Husayn Bin Alwaan who heard from the Holy imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws who from his father the Holy Imam Muhammad Al Baqir^-asws who said: ‘The Holy Imam Ali^-asws used to say, “When a person gives something in charity and it is returned back to him then the consumption of it is not lawful unto him. The only lawful thing for him to do is to spend it in the way of Allah^-azwj. This is the same as if someone were to free two slaves and they are returned back to him, they will no longer be slaves, but will be free men. In this way whatever is given in charity cannot be taken back’.

قال : وعنه ( عليه السلام ) في الرجل يخرج بالصدقة ليعطيها السائل فيجده قد ذهب ، قال : فليعطها غيره ولا يردها في ماله .

The Holy Imam^-asws has said: ‘When a person keeps aside something to be given in charity but the beggar goes away, he cannot include it in his own wealth again’.

Prayers of Beggars are accepted for the Donator

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد بن إسماعيل ، عن الحسن بن الجهم ، عن أبي الحسن ( عليه السلام ) قال : لا تحقروا دعوة أحد ، فإنه يستجاب لليهودي والنصراني فيكم ولا يستجاب لهم في أنفسهم .

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Hassan Bin Jaham who heard from the Holy Imam Ali Al Ridha^-asws who said: ‘Do not belittle the supplication of anyone that is done in your favour because even the supplications of Jews or Christians done is your favour can be acceptable despite the fact that they may not have been accepted for themselves’.

قال : وكان ( عليه السلام ) يأمر الخادم إذا أعطت السائل أن تأمره أن يدعو بالخير

And Imam^-asws also said: ‘The supplication of the poor and the beggar is not declined’.

Rights of a Fellow Momin

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى ، عن على بن سيف ، عن أبيه سيف ، عن عبد الاعلى بن أعين ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ـ في حديث ـ قال : إن من أشد ما افترض الله على خلقه ثلاثا : إنصاف المؤمن ⁽¹⁾ من نفسه حتى لا يرضى لاخيه من نفسه إلا بما يرضى لنفسه منه ، ومواساة الاخ في المال ، وذكر الله على كل حال ، ليس « سبحان الله والحمد لله » ولكن عند ما حرم الله عليه فيدعه

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Abdul Al A’la Ayni who hear from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘From those things which Allah^-azwj has made obligatory upon His^-azwj servants three of them are to be very strictly imposed – (1) Doing justice with a believer to the extent that he prefers for the other believer what he likes for himself; (2) Financial help for his brother in faith; (3) Remembrance of Allah^-azwj in all situations and this does not mean the repetition of the words ‘Subhan Allah and Al Hamd U Lillah’, but rather the abstention from sins in the remembrance of Allah^-azwj’.

وعنه ، عن أحمد ، عن ابن أبي عمير ، عن أبي علي صاحب الكلل ، عن أبان بن تغلب ، عن أبي عبدالله (عليه السلام ) ـ في حديث ـ أنه قال له : أخبرني عن حق المؤمن على المؤمن ، فقال : يا أبان ، دعه لا ترده ، قلت : بلى ، جعلت فداك ، فلم أزل اردد عليه ، فقال : يا أبان ، تقاسمه شطر مالك ، ثم نظر إلي فرأى ما دخلني ، فقال : يا أبان أما تعلم أن الله قد ذكر المؤثرين على أنفسهم ؟ قلت : بلى ، جعلت فداك ، فقال : إذا أنت قاسمته فلم تؤثره بعد إنما أنت وهو سواء ، إنما تؤثره إذا أنت أعطيته من النصف الآخر

Aban Bin Taghlub has narrated that he asked the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws: ‘What is the right of a believer upon a fellow believer?’ The Holy Imam^-asws replied: ‘O Aban! Do not ask me. But I insisted until such time the Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘O Aban! (One of the rights is that) Distribute your wealth with him like a partner does with a partner (half of your wealth)’. Then the Holy Imam^-asws looked at me and seeing my surprise, said: ‘O Aban! Do you not know that Allah^-azwj has Mentioned (In the Holy Quran) those who give others preference over themselves?’ I replied: ‘May I be your ransom, indeed I have read it’. The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘If you have given him half your wealth then this is not preference above oneself, as you will both be equal. Preference means to give the other half as well. (note: see 59:9 of the holy Quran for ‘preference’)

وعن عدة من أصحابنا ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد ، عن عثمان بن عيسى ، عن محمد بن عجلان قال : كنت عند أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) فدخل رجل فسلم فسأله : كيف من خلفت من إخوانك ؟ قال : فأحسن الثناء وزكى وأطرى ، فقال له : كيف عيادة أغنيائهم على فقرائهم ؟ فقال : قليلة ، قال : فكيف مشاهدة أغنيائهم لفقرائهم ؟ قال : قليلة ، قال : فكيف صلة أغنيائهم لفقرائهم في ذات أيديهم ؟ قال : إنك لتذكر أخلاقا ما ⁽¹⁾ هي فيمن عندنا ، قال : فقال : فكيف تزعم هؤلاء أنهم شيعة .

Muhammad Bin Ajlaan has narrated that one day he was with the Holy Imam Jafar Al Sadiq^-asws when a person came and greeted Him^-asws. The Holy Imam^-asws after returning the greeting asked him: ‘What is the condition of your fellow believers that you have left behind?’ That man praised them and said good things about them. The Holy Imam^-asws then asked him: ‘How do the wealthy among them help and treat those who are in need?’ He replied: ‘Very little’. The Holy Imam^-asws then asked him: ‘How do the people in hardship treat the poor and the needy?’ He replied again: ‘Very little’. The Holy Imam^-asws then asked him: ‘What kind of financial relationship do the wealthy keep with their poor brethren?’ The man then said: ‘Master! You are mentioning those things which are very rarely found among our people’. The Holy Imam^-asws then asked: ‘Then how can these people claim to be My^-asws Shia?’

وعنهم ، عن أحمد ، عن بكر بن صالح ، عن بندار بن محمد الطبري ، عن علي بن سويد السائي ، عن أبي الحسن موسى ( عليه السلام ) قال : قلت له : أوصني ، فقال : آمرك بتقوى الله ، ثم سكت ، فشكوت إليه قلة ذات يدي ، وقلت : والله لقد عريت حتى بلغ من عريي أن أبا فلان نزع ثوبين كانا عليه فكسانيهما ، فقال : صم وتصدق ، فقلت : أتصدق مما وصلني به إخواني وإن كان قليلا ؟ قال : تصدق بما رزقك الله ولو آثرت على نفسك .

Amr Bin Swaid Sa’ee has narrated that he asked the Holy Imam Musa Al Kadhim^-asws for some advice: ‘I hereby command you to observe piety and be obedient’. Then He^-asws went silent. Then I complained about my weak financial situation: ‘By God! Such and such took pity on me and gave me some clothes to cover my nakedness’. The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘Keep fasting and give charity’. I said: ‘Shall I give charity from that which my brothers have given me despite it being very little?’ The Holy Imam^-asws replied: ‘Give out of whatever that Allah^-azwj has given you even then you have to give priority to needy one over yourself’.

قال : وقال ( عليه السلام ) : استغنوا عن الناس ولو بشوص السواك

The Holy Prophet^-saww said: ‘Refrain from depending on people even if it is of cleaning your toothbrush (i.e., Do it yourself).’

محمد بن الحسين الرضي في ( نهج البلاغة ) عن أمير المؤمنين ( عليه السلام ) إن فوت الحاجة أهون من طلبها إلى غير أهلها . وقال ( عليه السلام ) العفاف زينة الفقر ، والشكر زينة الغنى .

Syed Razi relates that the Holy Imam Ali^-asws said: ‘Death of a desire is better than to ask from someone for it to be fulfilled. Piety is the adornment in poverty just as thankfulness is the adornment in straitened circumstances.’

قَالَ وَ قَالَ ع‏ وَجْهُكَ مَاءٌ جَامِدٌ يُقَطِّرُهُ السُّؤَالُ فَانْظُرْ عِنْدَ مَنْ تُقَطِّرُهُ.

The Holy Imam Ali^-asws said: ‘Your face is like a collection of water which gets scattered into drops by asking from people.’

أحمد بن فهد في ( عدة الداعي ) عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : شيعتنا من لا يسأل الناس ولو مات جوعا

Ibn Fahad Hilli has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘Our Shia is one who would rather die of hunger than beg from people.’

قال : وقال النبي ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) يوما لأصحابه : ألا تبايعوني ؟ فقالوا : قد بايعناك يا رسول الله ، قال : تبايعوني على أن لا تسألوا الناس ، فكان بعد ذلك تقع المخصرة من يد أحدهم فينزل لها ولا يقول لأحد : ناولنيها .

It has been related from the Holy Prophet^-saww saying to His^-saww companions: ‘Have you all not done my ‘Baiyyat?’ They all replied, ‘Yes, O Prophet of Allah, we do indeed!’ He^-saww said: ‘You promise Me that you will never beg from the people.’ And so the companions did that to the extent that even if a rider’s whip were to fall down from his hand, he would not ask anyone to give it to him, but would dismount and pick it up himself.’

قَالَ وَ قَالَ ع‏ لَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ يَتَّخِذُ حَبْلًا فَيَأْتِي بِحُزْمَةِ حَطَبٍ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ فَيَبِيعُهَا فَيَكُفُّ بِهَا وَجْهَهُ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ.

The Holy Prophet^-saww said: ‘It is better if you were to take a rope and fetch some firewood to sell it than beg from the people.’

ـ قال : وقال النبي ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : من سألنا أعطيناه ، ومن استغنى أغناه الله .

The Holy Prophet^-saww said: ‘If a person were to ask us for something we will give it to him, and one who does not, Allah^-azwj will place him in straitened circumstances.’

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن الحسن بن محبوب ، عمن حدثه ، عن مسمع ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : لا تسألوا امتي في مجالسها فتبخلوها .

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Usama from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘Do not ask in a gathering for you will make it empty.’

محمد بن الحسين الرضي في ( نهج البلاغة ) عن أمير المؤمنين ( عليه السلام ) إنه قال : من شكا الحاجة إلى مؤمن فكأنما شكاها إلى الله ، ومن شكاها إلى كافر فكأنما شكى الله .

Syed Razi has related from the Holy Imam Ali^-asws that: ‘When a believer complains about his condition in front of a believing brother then this is as if he has complained in front of Allah^-azwj while the one who complains about his condition in front of an unbeliever then it is as if he has complained about Allah^-azwj.’

وفي ( الخصال ) عن الخليل بن أحمد ، عن أبي خزيمة ، عن أبي موسى ، عن عبد الرحمن ، عن سفيان ، عن الأعمش ، عن سليمان بن مسهر ، عن خرشة بن الحر ، عن أبي ذر ، عن النبي ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قال : ثلاثة لا يكلمهم الله : المنان الذي لا يعطي شيئا إلا بمنة ، والمسبل إزاره ، والمنفق سلعته بالخلف الفاجر

Abu Dharr^-ra narrates from the Holy Prophet^-saww that: ‘Three types of people are such that Allah^-azwj will never Speak to them – The one who reminds his favours; the arrogant one; and one who spend his wealth on his mischievous son.’

Lending Money to others

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن أبي علي الأشعري ، عن محمد بن عبد الجبار ، عن صفوان بن يحيى ، عن عبد الأعلى ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) : كل معروف صدقة

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Abdul A’ala from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws: ‘It is the guidance from the Holy Prophet^-saww that every favour is a form of charity.’

Every Favour is a Charity

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى ، عن الحسن بن محبوب ، عن عبدالله بن سنان ، عن الوليد بن صبيح ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ـ في حديث ـ إنه تصدق على ثلاثة من السؤال ثم رد الرابع وقال : لو أن رجلا كان له مال يبلغ ثلاثين أو أربعين الف درهم ثم شاء أن لا يبقي منها إلا وضعها في حق لفعل ، فيبقى لا مال له فيكون من الثلاثة الذين يرد دعاؤهم ، قلت : من هم ؟ قال : أحدهم : رجل كان له مال فأنفقه في وجهه ثم قال : يارب ارزقني ، فيقال له : ألم أجعل لك سبيلا إلى طلب الرزق ؟

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Walid Bin Sabeeh that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws gave charity to three beggars one after the other and then turned the fourth one away empty handed and said: ‘If a person has thirty or forty thousand Dirhams and wishes to spend in good causes then he can do it but then he will have nothing left and then he will become like one of those three people whose supplication Allah^-azwj does not accept. The narrator asked: ‘And who is that one?’ The Holy Imam^-asws replied: ‘One of them is the one who had a lot of money and he spent it all in good causes and then he supplicates to Allah^-azwj to give him wealth. He will be told, ‘Did we not open the door of sustenance for you?’

وعنه ، عن أبيه ، عن النوفلي ، عن السكوني ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : قال رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) : أفضل الصدقة صدقة تكون عن فضل الكف

Sakuni has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws who said that: ‘The Holy Prophet^-saww has said that the best charity is that which is given from the wealth left over after the necessaries of life.’

وعن أبي علي الاشعرى ، عن محمد بن عبد الجبار ، عن صفوان بن يحيى ، عن عبدالأعلى ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال :رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) : كل معروف صدقة ، وأفضل الصدقة عن (1) ظهر غنى ، وابدأ بمن تعول ، واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى ، ولا يلوم الله على الكفاف .

Abdul A’la has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘The Holy Prophet^-saww has said that every favour is charity and the best charity is that which is given after having taken care of the necessaries of life and the upper hand is better than the lower hand and Allah^-azwj does not place blame if there is nothing left over and charity is not given.

Spending in the Way of Allah^-azwj

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن محمد بن الحسين ، عن صفوان ، عن أبي الحسن الرضا ( عليه السلام ) قال : دخل عليه مولى له فقال له : هل أنفقت اليوم شيئا ؟ فقال : لا والله ، فقال أبو الحسن ( عليه السلام ) : فمن أين يخلف الله علينا ؟ أنفق ولو درهما واحدا

Sheykh Kulayni narrates from Safwan that a slave of the Holy Imam Ali Al Ridha^-asws presented himself and the Holy Imam^-asws asked him: ‘Have you spent anything today?’ he replied, ‘NO I have not!’ The Holy Imam^-asws said: ‘Then how will Allah^-azwj give us a manifold return. Go and spend even if it be one Dirham.’

وعن الحسين بن محمد ، عن معلى بن محمد ، عن سليمان بن سفيان ، عن إسحاق بن عمار ، عن أبي عبدالله (عليه السلام) قال : يأتي على الناس زمان من سأل الناس عاش ومن سكت مات ، قلت : فما أصنع إن أدركت ذلك الزمان ؟ قال : تعينهم بما عندك فإن لم تجد فبجاهك

Is’haq Bin Ammar narrates from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘A time will come upon the people that whoever will beg will survive and the one who will stay silent will die.’ The narrator asked: ‘If I were to be present during this time what shall I do?’ The Holy Imam^-asws replied: ‘Help them with whatever that you possess and if you have nothing then help them with your influence.’

Earn as well as Spend in a Lawful Way

محمد بن يعقوب قال : في رواية أبي بصير عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) في قوله عزّ وجلّ : ( أنفقوا من طيبات ما كسبتم ) (1) فقال : كان القوم قد كسبوا مكاسب سوء في الجاهلية فلما أسلموا أرادوا أن يخرجوها من أموالهم فيتصدقوا بها ، فأبي الله عزّ وجلّ أن يخرجوا إلا من أطيب ما كسبوا محمد بن علي بن الحسين قال : قال الصادق ( عليه السلام ) : لو أن الناس أخذوا ما أمرهم الله به فأنفقوه فيما نهاهم الله عنه ما قبله منهم ، ولو أخذوا ما نهاهم الله عنه فأنفقوه فيما أمرهم الله به ما قبله منهم ، حتى يأخذوه من حق وينفقوه في حق

Sheykh Sadouq has narrated that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘If people were to earn their wealth in the manner which Allah^-azwj has Told them to do but spend it in a manner which He^-azwj has Forbidden it then it would not be accepted. If they earn it by unlawful means but spend it in a lawful manner, even then it would not be accepted from them until they earn by lawful means and spend it in lawful manner.’

Reward of Generosity

محمد بن علي بن الحسين قال : قال الصادق ( عليه السلام ) : المنجيات : إطعام الطعام ، وإفشاء السلام ، والصلاة بالليل والناس نيام

Sheykh Sadouq has narrated that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said: ‘Salvation can be attained from three things – Feeding the people; Spreading peace; and Praying when people are sleeping at night.’

وعن علي بن إبراهيم ، عن محمد بن عيسى ، عن ابن فضال ، عن عبدالله بن ميمون ، عن جعفر ، عن أبيه ، أن النبي ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ) قال : الرزق أسرع إلى من يطعم الطعام من السكين في السنام

Abdullah Bin Maymoon has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws who from his father the Holy Imam Muhammad Al Baqir^-asws that: ‘The Holy Prophet^-saww says that: ‘Just as the knife enters the hump of a camel easily, sustenance reaches that person who feeds the people.

Consoling is also a kind of Charity

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن طلحة بن زيد ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) (1) قال : قال أمير المؤمنين ( عليه السلام ) : أول ما يبدأ به في الآخرة صدقة الماء ـ يعني : في الأجر

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Talha Bin Zayd from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that; ‘The Commander of the Faithful^-asws has said that on the Day of Judgment the first people to be rewarded will be the ones who had given the charity of water.’

وعنه ، عن محمد بن عبدالله بن محمد ، عن علي بن الحكم ، عن أبان بن عثمان ،عن مسمع ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : أفضل الصدقة إبراد كبد حرى

Musamm has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘The highest charity is to calm down an angry heart.’

وعن علي بن إبراهيم ، عن أبيه ، عن ابن أبي عمير ، عن معاوية بن عمار ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : من سقى الماء في موضع يوجد فيه الماء كان كمن أعتق رقبة ، ومن سقى الماء في موضع لا يوجد فيه الماء كان كمن أحيا نفسا ، ومن أحيا نفسا فكأنما أحيا الناس جميعا

Muawiya Bin Ammar has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that; ‘If a person were to provide water to people in a place where water is available then he will get the reward of freeing one slave. And if he were to provide water in a place where water is not available then he will get the reward of reviving one life and whoever revives one life it is as if he has revived all the people.’

وعنه ، عن أحمد ، عن ابن فضال ، عن ابن بكير ، عن ضريس بن عبد الملك عن أبي جعفر ( عليه السلام ) قال : إن الله تبارك وتعالى يحب إبراد الكبد الحرى ، ومن سقى كبدا حرى من بهيمة وغيرها (1) أظله الله (2) يوم لا ظل إلا ظله

Zarees bin Abdul Malik has narrated from the Holy Imam Muhammad Al Baqir^-asws that: ‘Allah^-azwj befriends those who calm down angry hearts and whoso calms down an angry animal then Allah^-azwj will give him a place under the shade on the Day of Judgment where there will be no other shade available.’

محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن محمد بن أحمد ، عن بعض أصحابنا ، عن محمد بن عبدالله عن محمد بن يزيد ، عن أبي الحسن الأول ( عليه السلام ) قال : من لم يستطع أن يصلنا فليصل فقراء شيعتنا ، ومن لم يستطع أن يزور قبورنا فليزر قبور صلحاء إخواننا

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Muhammad Bin Yazeed who from the Holy Imam Musa Al Kadhim^-asws that: ‘If a person does not have the capacity to do good to Us^-asws then he should do good to the poor of Our^-asws Shia and if a person cannot visit Our^-asws Holy Tombs then he should visit the graves of Our^-asws good Shias.’

محمد بن علي بن الحسين بإسناده عن جميل قال : قال الصادق ( عليه السلام ) : خياركم سمحاؤكم ، وشراركم بخلاؤكم ، ومن خالص الايمان البر بالإخوان والسعي في حوائجهم ، وإن البار بالإخوان ليحبه الرحمن ، وفي ذلك مرغمة الشيطان ، وتزحزح عن النيران ، ودخول الجنان ثم قال لجميل : يا جميل أخبر بهذا غرر أصحابك ، قلت : جعلت ، فداك من غرر أصحابي ؟ قال : هم البارون بالإخوان في العسر واليسر . . . . الحديث

Sheykh Sadouq has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that; ‘The best of you is the generous among you and the worst of you are the niggardly among you. One of the signs of pure faith is to do good to your believing brothers and you have to try repeatedly to fulfil their desires and whoever does good to his believing brothers then Allah^-azwj loves him and grinds the nose of Satan (la) in the dust, keeps him away from the fire of Hell and grants him entry into Paradise. O Jameel! Inform your reliable friends about this.’ Jameel said: ‘May I be your ransom! Who are my reliable friends?’ Imam^-asws replied: ‘They are those who do good to their believing brothers despite their straitened circumstances.’

قال الصدوق : وقال الصادق ( عليه السلام ) : من لم يقدر على صلتنا فليصل صالحي موالينا (1) يكتب له ثواب صلتنا ، ومن لم يقدر على زيارتنا فليزر صالحي موالينا (2) يكتب له ثواب زيارتنا

Sheykh Sadouq has narrated from the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws that: ‘Whoever does not have the ability to do favours to Us^-asws should do favours to the good among our Shia, in his book of deed it will be written that he has done favours to Us^-asws. Whoever is not in a position to visit Us^-asws should visit the good among our Shia then the reward of visiting Us^-asws will be recorded in his book of deeds.’

الحسن بن محمد الطوسي في ( مجالسه ) عن أبيه ، عن ابن الغضائري ، عن التلعكبري ، عن محمد بن همام ، عن علي بن الحسين الهمداني ، عن محمد بن خالد ، عن أبي قتادة ، عن صفوان الجمال ، عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ـ في حديث ـ إنه قال للمعلى بن خنيس : يا معلى ، اعزز بالله يعززك ، قال : بماذا ؟ قال : يا معلى ، خف الله يخف منك كل شيء ، يا معلى ، تحبب إلى إخوانك بصلتهم فإن الله تبارك وتعالى جعل العطاء محبة والمنع مبغضة ، فأنتم والله إن تسألوني فاعطكم فتحبوني أحب إلي من أن لا تسألوني فلا اعطيكم فتبغضوني ، ومهما أجرى الله لكم من شيء على يدي فالمحمود الله ، ولا تبعدون من شكر ما أجرى الله لكم على يدي

Sheykh Hassan the son of Sheykh Toosi relates in one Hadeeth that the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq^-asws said to Mo’ala bin Khanees: ‘O Mo’ala! Align yourself to (love) Allah^-azwj and He^-azwj will align Himself with (love) you.’ Mo’ala asked, ‘How shall I do that?’ Imam^-asws replied: ‘O Mo’ala! Be afraid of Allah^-azwj and He^-azwj will make everything scared of you. O Mo’ala! Do favours unto your brothers and become their beloved because Allah^-azwj befriends those who do good and makes an enemy of those who return people empty handed. By God^-azwj! If you were to ask me for something and I give it to you and then you become My^-asws devotee then this is better for Me^-asws than if you do not ask Me^-asws for something and I do not grant it to you and you become inimical towards Me^-asws. Remember! Whenever Allah^-azwj Grants you a favour through Me^-asws then in reality the one who is worthy of praise is Allah^-azwj and so do not stay away from this thankfulness which Allah^-azwj has routed it through My Hands^-asws.’
